So Amazon finally got some of its internet satellites off the ground. Monday night, an Atlas V rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral carrying the first batch of production Kuiper satellites, 27 of them, stacked up like books and pushed into low orbit a couple hundred miles up. I watched the stream on my phone in bed way later than I should have been awake, which is basically the only way I ever watch a launch these days, half asleep with the brightness turned down so I dont wake anyone up.
I want to like this more than I do.
Kuiper has been "coming soon" for so long it started to feel like vaporware with a really good PR department. Amazon announced the project back in 2019, filed for FCC approval to put over 3,200 satellites in orbit, and then just... didnt, for years. Delays, more delays, a scrubbed launch last fall because of weather, another slip because of ground equipment issues. Meanwhile Starlink went from a novelty to something like 7,000 satellites and actual paying customers in something like 100+ countries. Amazon is starting this constellation with 27 satellites while its biggest competitor already has a several-thousand-satellite head start. Thats not a close race, thats Amazon showing up to mile 20 of a marathon everyone else already finished.
Heres the thing though, and its the part most of the recaps Ive seen skip past: Amazon isnt actually racing to catch up with Starlink in some abstract "who has more satellites" sense. Theyre racing a legal deadline. The FCC license requires half of the full 3,236-satellite constellation, so over 1,600 satellites, to be in orbit by July of next year. Miss that and they risk losing the license entirely. So this launch wasnt really a triumphant "we're back" moment, it was Amazon making a court date. 27 down, something like 1,600-ish to go, in about 14 months. Do that math and youll see why there are already rumblings about needing way more launch capacity than ULA alone can give them, which is presumably why they've also got Blue Origin and SpaceX rides lined up (yes, paying their biggest rival to help hit the deadline against their biggest rival, which is a little bit funny if you think about it too long).
I live somewhere with genuinely bad rural broadband, so this isnt purely academic for me. My options right now are a DSL line that chokes the second more than one person in the house is on a video call, or Starlink, which works great until it doesnt and costs $120 a month before you even buy the dish. Ive griped about Starlink pricing on here before and I stand by it. If Kuiper actually launches on schedule and Amazon prices it anywhere near what they priced Prime shipping originally (aggressively, as a loss leader to build the user base), that could matter a lot for people like me. Big if. Amazon has said terminals will come in a few tiers, a cheap compact one, a standard one, and a bigger "pro" version for businesses, but no real consumer pricing yet. Until there are numbers on a page Im not getting my hopes up.
What actually struck me watching the launch wasnt the rocket, it was the reentry burn footage from the booster coming back down, which ULA doesnt even reuse, so it was just going to fall in the ocean either way. Weird that the "boring" part of an Atlas V launch, the part with zero drama attached, is still more interesting to me than most of what passes for tech news lately. No AI angle, no subscription tier, just a big dumb rocket doing its one job.
Anyway. 27 satellites are up, roughly 1,600 or so to go before next July, and I'll believe consumer availability when I see a price.
