Monster Hunter Wilds Runs Like Garbage on My Perfectly Fine PC

I don't usually turn techpad into a gaming blog, but I've spent the better part of five days shouting at my monitor so here we are.

Monster Hunter Wilds came out last Friday, and if you've been anywhere near Steam since then you already know it did numbers. Capcom's launch numbers have been all over the gaming press, and from what I've seen it pushed well past a million concurrent players within the first day or two, putting it up there with the biggest PC launches of the last few years. I preordered back in January because the open beta was fun even when it was falling over, and I figured by launch day they'd have ironed out the worst of it.

They had not ironed out the worst of it.

Here's my setup: Ryzen 5 7600, RTX 3070, 32GB of RAM, game installed on an NVMe drive. This is not a bad PC. It runs Cyberpunk 2077 with the fancy lighting turned up and still holds a locked 60. It ran the Wilds beta acceptably back in the fall. So I was not expecting to boot up the full release, run the built-in benchmark tool (credit to Capcom for including one, more studios should), and get handed a "performance: fair" rating at 1080p on the recommended preset.

Fair. Not good. Fair.

To get anything resembling a stable 60fps I had to turn on frame generation, the thing where the game invents extra frames between the ones it's actually rendering so the counter goes up without actually reducing input lag the way real performance would. It works, sort of, in the sense that the number says 60 and the game feels closer to 40. A bunch of tech outlets have already gone deep on this, pointing out that a lot of the stutter isn't even about your graphics card, it's traversal and asset streaming choking on the CPU side. Which tracks with what I'm seeing, because dropping every setting to low barely moved my framerate at all. The bottleneck isn't the GPU, and turning off shadows doesn't fix a CPU problem.

I want to be clear, I'm not some purist who thinks frame generation is evil. I use DLSS constantly and don't feel bad about it. What bugs me is when it stops being an enhancement and starts being load-bearing, the thing standing between you and a playable framerate instead of a way to push past playable into great. That's a different product than the one implied by the system requirements page, and specs that name a 3070-equivalent card for a game that then needs frame gen to hit 60 on that exact card feel a little dishonest, in a way that's gotten more common with big releases lately. I don't remember this being nearly as constant a complaint five years ago. Maybe I'm misremembering, it's just the gut feeling I get watching this happen release after release now.

None of this is stopping people from playing, myself included. The hunting loop is as good as it's ever been, the new wound mechanic on monsters is a genuinely smart addition, and I've already put about eighteen hours in despite the frame rate grumbling, which probably tells you everything about how good the game underneath the performance mess actually is. I just wish "run the benchmark tool before you buy" had to be standard advice for a release this size in 2025.

If you're on the fence and your rig is anything short of a top-tier card, run that benchmark before you hand over the sixty dollars, not after. Capcom put it right there in the main menu for a reason, and for once I'd actually trust what it tells you over the assumption that your PC is fine because it handled the last game okay.
