I had the SpaceX livestream open in a tiny window behind my terminal for most of this morning, half-working, half-waiting for the hatch to open. Today's the day the Polaris Dawn crew did the first spacewalk from a commercial spacecraft, and the part that's been rattling around my head since is a detail a lot of the recaps are skipping past: Crew Dragon doesn't have an airlock.
Think about that for a second. On the shuttle, on the ISS, you've got a dedicated little chamber that gets depressurized so the rest of the vehicle stays livable while someone floats outside. Dragon doesn't have room for one, so when Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis went out today, the entire capsule got vented down toward vacuum. All four crew members, Isaacman, Gillis, and the two who stayed inside, Scott Poteet and Anna Menon, were sealed in their suits and breathing suit air for basically the whole operation, hatch open or not. That's not a footnote, that's the whole design decision, and it's what actually makes this riskier than the version of "spacewalk" most of us have in our heads. Nobody got to just sit there in a t-shirt while their crewmates worked outside.
The suits are new too. SpaceX built them specifically for this mission, and they don't look anything like the bulky NASA EMUs everyone pictures. Slimmer, a heads-up display built into the visor, 3D-printed joints. Isaacman climbed out first and ran through a short set of mobility tests on the structure bolted to the side of the capsule (SpaceX is calling it "Skywalker," which, sure), and Gillis followed a bit later doing the same. Neither of them fully left the spacecraft the way you'd picture an ISS spacewalk, drifting around on a long tether. This was closer to a stand-up test, hands on the structure the entire time. Still counts, and it's still the first time anyone not employed by a government space agency has done it.
The altitude number is the part I keep coming back to. Earlier this week the capsule flew an orbit that peaked around 870 miles up, higher than any human has traveled since the Apollo missions stopped going to the moon. The ISS sits at roughly 250 miles. So for a stretch of hours, this crew was farther from Earth than anyone alive today besides them, unless you're counting the handful of guys who walked on the moon in the 60s and 70s. That's a strange thing to type out on an ordinary Thursday.
One thing bugs me a little about how this is getting covered, and I'll say it here since I doubt I'll bother again: every headline leads with "billionaire" before it says a word about the engineering. I get why, Isaacman paid for the whole thing out of pocket and that's a legitimate part of the story, but leading with it flattens what's actually a pretty gnarly hardware problem. Building a suit you'd trust your life to, for a capsule that was never designed to let anyone leave it, in something like two and a half years of development, isn't a small thing regardless of whose card got charged. I'm not especially interested in relitigating the should-billionaires-be-doing-this argument in this post. Plenty of other sites will happily do that for you this week.
Small thing I appreciated: they actually kept the internal cabin cameras running during depressurization instead of cutting away to a mission control graphic the second it got interesting. You could watch the suits stiffen slightly as the pressure dropped around them. Little details like that are the reason I still bother watching these live instead of reading a summary afterward, even at 7am with coffee that's gone cold by the time anything actually happens on screen.
It's easy to get numb to space stuff once enough Falcon 9 booster landings turn into background noise you half-watch while doing dishes. This one didn't feel like a rerun though. Worth the wasted morning, and worth remembering that "commercial spaceflight" for the last few years has mostly meant satellites and cargo, not a couple of people opening a hatch on purpose at 17,000 miles an hour.
