So Tesla issued a recall this week and it's not the one you'd guess. Forget the crash sensors or the software glitches everyone assumed would eventually catch up with the Cybertruck. This one's about the accelerator pedal. Specifically, the little rubber-and-metal pad that sits on top of it can come loose and slide up until it wedges against the trim above the pedal, holding the throttle down while you're trying to brake. Tesla's telling owners it affects basically every Cybertruck built so far, something like 3,900-ish trucks, which at this point in production is close enough to "all of them" that the distinction barely matters.

The part that got me wasn't the defect itself. Stuff breaks, recalls happen, every automaker on earth has issued one for something dumber than this. What got me was the fix: Tesla isn't replacing the pad, they're just taking it off. No pedal cover at all. You'll drive a hundred-thousand-dollar stainless steel truck with a bare metal pedal like it's a 1994 Civic somebody stripped for a track day. I actually laughed out loud reading that in the NHTSA filing yesterday.

I've gone back and forth on the Cybertruck since it showed up on stage in 2019 with the "unbreakable" windows that, famously, broke on stage. My take hasn't really moved: it's a truck designed to look like a rendering, and it's been fighting the reality of being an actual physical object you sit inside ever since. Panel gaps, wiper motor issues, the trim piece thing now the pedal. None of these individually are catastrophic. Together they read like a company that shipped a shape before it finished being a vehicle. I don't think that's controversial to say anymore, even among people who like Tesla generally.

What's interesting to me is how this happened mechanically. From what's been described, the pedal pad was just friction-fit, not bolted or clipped down in a way that resists being pushed forward by, say, someone's shoe sliding around, or a floor mat bunching up. There was a video going around a few days ago of a test drive where this apparently happened in real time and the driver plowed into a wall trying to stop a truck that wouldn't stop accelerating. Nobody was seriously hurt as far as I know, but it's the kind of failure mode that should've shown up on a bench test, not in a customer's driveway eighteen months after this thing was supposed to originally ship.

I keep thinking about this in the context of Llama 3 coming out last week too, which, yes, everyone and their cousin has already written about, so I'll spare you another take on the benchmarks. But there's a pattern across both stories if you squint: companies moving fast enough that the last five percent of the work, the boring unglamorous verification part, gets treated as optional. Meta shipped an 8B and 70B model into the wild in days, which is genuinely impressive engineering, and also the kind of speed that only works because language models failing don't send trucks into walls.

Anyway. If you're one of the people who put down a deposit back in 2019 and are still waiting for your build slot, I don't think this changes your calculus much, you've waited this long. But if you already own one, go get the pedal checked, and in the meantime maybe drive with your foot a little more deliberately than usual. Tesla says the fix is fast, in-and-out at a service center, no parts needed since they're literally removing a part instead of adding one, which has to be a first for an auto recall.

I'll say this too, mostly as a complaint I've been sitting on for a while: I'm tired of "software update" being treated as the universal safety net for hardware that wasn't finished. It works great until it's a physical pedal pad sliding around in the footwell, at which point there's no OTA update coming to save you. Some problems are still just problems you have to build correctly the first time.
