I set an alarm for 8:20am on a Wednesday to watch a robot land on the moon, and I don't regret it even a little.
Chandrayaan-3, India's lunar lander, touched down near the Moon's south pole at 6:04pm IST today, which for me on the east coast worked out to just after 8:30 in the morning. I'd already had coffee going before the alarm even went off, mostly because I was too nervous to sleep through it. I propped my laptop up against the toaster (the kitchen counter is genuinely the best wifi spot in this apartment, don't ask me why) and pulled up ISRO's YouTube stream with about fifteen minutes to spare.
And it was packed. I don't have an exact number I trust enough to print, but at one point the little viewer counter in the corner was showing millions of people watching at once, which is a wild thing to see attached to a livestream that's mostly just a control room and some telemetry graphics. No slick countdown clock, no celebrity narrator, just engineers in matching polos watching numbers scroll by and occasionally clapping. I loved every second of it.
Here's the part that got me though. Russia tried this too, just a few days earlier. Luna-25, their first lunar mission in almost fifty years, crashed into the Moon on August 19th after a botched orbital maneuver. Roscosmos put out a pretty terse statement about losing contact with the spacecraft. So you had two countries racing for basically the same patch of lunar south pole in the same week, and one of them stuck the landing while the other one didn't. I'm not going to pretend that's not a little bit dramatic. Space is unforgiving and everybody involved knows it, which is probably why the room at ISRO's mission control looked so tense right up until the "touchdown confirmed" moment, when it very much did not look tense anymore.
The lander is called Vikram, the rover riding inside it is called Pragyan, and assuming everything goes to plan over the next few hours it'll roll down a ramp and start poking around the regolith. Nobody's landed anything intact near the south pole before. That region matters because there's a real possibility of water ice sitting in permanently shadowed craters down there, which is the kind of thing future missions (crewed ones, eventually, if NASA's Artemis timeline holds up even loosely) would actually want to know about before they show up.
What I keep thinking about is the price tag. Reporting I trust puts the whole Chandrayaan-3 mission at something like 600 crore rupees, which comes out to roughly 75 million US dollars. I've seen that number get compared to Hollywood movie budgets so many times today that it's basically become a meme, and yeah, it's a genuinely funny comparison, but I also think it undersells what ISRO actually pulled off here. Landing on the Moon isn't a special effect. Doing it for less than what a lot of studios spend on a mid-tier action movie is a legitimately different kind of achievement than "did it cheaply," it's "did it efficiently," and those aren't the same thing even if they sound similar in a headline.
I also want to complain, briefly, about US morning news. I flipped over to check if any of the network shows were covering it live and got a segment about a celebrity divorce instead. Maybe that changes by tonight once the dust (sorry) settles, but it was a strange thing to watch unfold almost entirely through a foreign space agency's own YouTube channel while the domestic coverage caught up hours later.
Anyway. My coffee went cold, the toaster never got used, and somewhere up there a four-legged lander is sitting quietly on gray dirt that no spacecraft has ever touched before. I've watched a lot of livestreams in my life. Not many of them made me want to text three different people the second it happened.
