So the actual pictures dropped this morning. If you've got eyes anywhere near the internet today you've already seen the deep field shot, the one Biden previewed at the White House last night, the one with the little orange arcs and thousands of galaxies packed into a patch of sky about the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length. NASA put the rest out around 10:30 this morning, live on NASA TV, and I got up early specifically to watch it happen in real time instead of just seeing the JPEGs land in my feed later.
I want to talk about a part of this that isn't the pretty pictures, because everyone else today is doing the pretty pictures and doing them well. Stephan's Quintet is gorgeous, the Carina Nebula looks like something out of a Roger Dean album cover, fine. What I actually care about is that within an hour of the broadcast ending, the raw exposure data was sitting in MAST (the Space Telescope Science Institute's public archive), free for anyone to pull down. Not a press-release TIFF. The actual calibrated FITS files, the same stuff the mission scientists themselves are working from.
This matters because there's a whole community of people, mostly hobbyists, who've spent years doing exactly this with Hubble data. They pull the individual filtered exposures, stack them, adjust the color channels by hand, and often end up with images that are more interesting than what the agency PR team ships, because they're not constrained by "this needs to look good in a press conference." I've been following a few of these folks on Twitter for years now and by early afternoon there were already reprocessed versions floating around that pushed contrast in places NASA's official release didn't bother with. Same data, different eye. It's one of my favorite things about how space imaging works now and almost nobody outside the astrophotography-nerd corner of the internet seems to know it's happening.
Small complaint while I'm here: NASA's own site buckled under the load this morning, which, come on, you knew this was going to be the most-viewed thing you've published in years, maybe budget for it. I had three tabs open trying to get the full-res download of the deep field and two of them just spun forever. Not a huge deal in the end, I got there, but it's 2022 and this keeps happening to major orgs on their biggest days. Feels like it should be a solved problem by now.
The other thing nobody's really saying out loud: this is six months of commissioning work compressed into one press event. Webb launched back on Christmas Day, spent about a month getting itself to L2, then months more aligning eighteen hexagonal mirror segments to a precision that's honestly hard to even describe in normal words, fractions of a wavelength of light. All of that happened quietly, with occasional single-star test images that were interesting mostly to people who already knew what they were looking at. Today was the "okay, now show the public what this was for" moment, and it's a good one. The Southern Ring Nebula image, where you can see the dying star's companion clearly for basically the first time, is the one that actually stopped me mid-scroll rather than the deep field everyone's making their profile picture.
I'll say one unpopular-ish thing: the deep field image, as a first impression, is a little overhyped relative to the other four. It's an incredible scientific result and I don't want to undersell what it represents: light from 13 billion years ago, gravitational lensing doing the work of a much bigger telescope than we could ever build. But as an image you look at for ten seconds on your phone, it doesn't hit the way Carina does, and I think a chunk of the "wow" response today is people reacting to the number in the caption rather than what's actually on screen. That's fine. That's how PR is supposed to work. I just find the quieter images more compelling once the number stops doing the heavy lifting.
Anyway. If you want to go past the Instagram version of today, MAST is open, the data's there, and you don't need a telescope budget to poke at thirteen-billion-year-old light on your own laptop tonight.
