So the platform at Arecibo actually came down. If you missed it: the observatory's 900-ton instrument platform, the one that hung 450 feet above the big dish on a web of cables, gave out early Tuesday morning and dropped straight through the reflector. NSF had already said a few weeks back, after a second cable snapped in November, that they were planning to decommission the whole telescope because their engineers didn't think anyone could safely climb up there to fix it. Nobody expected it to just fall on its own before the demolition crews could even get scheduled.

I feel like I should write something properly somber about radio astronomy and how much planetary defense work Arecibo actually did (it tracked near-Earth asteroids, it wasn't only a SETI thing, despite what half the headlines this week implied), but honestly the thing that actually stopped me mid-scroll was a dumb, very specific memory. I ran SETI@home on my family's Compaq Presario for something like four straight years starting around 2001. Downloaded the client off a CD that came bundled with a computer magazine, if I remember right, and then just let it chew through radio telescope data chunks whenever the machine was idle. The chunks were recorded at Arecibo. That's the connection my brain apparently filed away and held onto for nineteen years.

Here's the part that's a little embarrassing: I used to schedule my dial-up sessions around it. We had one phone line, my mom needed it in the evenings, so I'd kick off a download of a fresh work unit right before bed and let the screensaver crunch it overnight while everyone slept. In the morning I'd check how many "angular range" units I'd processed and whether our tiny team had climbed in the rankings. This was, generously, a few hundred people worldwide caring about a leaderboard nobody else knew existed. I was thirteen. It felt enormous.

SETI@home itself already wound down earlier this year, quietly, back in March, when the Berkeley team announced they'd stop sending out new work units after twenty-one years, partly because they'd already banked more data than they could realistically analyze and partly because, as these things go, distributed screensaver computing just isn't how citizen science gets done anymore. Nobody wrote a eulogy for that one. It was a line in a blog post I read on a lunch break and forgot about within the hour. So it's a strange kind of double ending: the software project quietly stopped in the spring, and now the actual physical telescope that generated the data has collapsed on itself in December, and somehow the second thing is the one that made the first thing feel real to me.

What I can't get past is that this was one structure. Built in 1963, largest single-dish radio telescope on Earth for over fifty years, until the Chinese FAST telescope surpassed it in 2016. It survived hurricanes. It survived a couple earthquakes. It got name-checked in Contact and got a whole action sequence in GoldenEye, and every single article this week led with the Bond connection before mentioning any actual research, which honestly annoys me a little. Nobody's opening paragraph about the Hubble mentions a movie cameo first. Arecibo mapped near-Earth asteroids that could theoretically hit us, it helped confirm the first exoplanets ever detected back in 1992, and it sent the actual Arecibo message out into space in 1974, a deliberate broadcast aimed at a star cluster 25,000 light years away, which is the kind of thing that sounds made up but genuinely happened.

There's apparently no plan yet to rebuild anything on the site. Puerto Rico's been through a lot the last few years, the observatory's own budget had been getting squeezed for a decade before this, and radio astronomy money mostly flows toward newer, differently-shaped projects now anyway. So I don't think there's a version of this where something equivalent goes back up on that mountain.

Anyway. I don't really have a neat point to make here. I just keep picturing that Presario's fan running all night in 2002, working on data that came from a dish that doesn't exist in that shape anymore.
