Everybody I know spent this past weekend refreshing Best Buy's stock page trying to get a PS5, or arguing on Twitter about whether the new M1 MacBooks are actually as good as the benchmarks say. Fine, whatever, I get it, that's where the attention goes in November 2020. But there's a story that got buried under all that noise this week that I can't stop thinking about, and it's not a product launch. It's the opposite of one.
The National Science Foundation announced last Thursday that it's going to decommission the Arecibo Observatory. If that name doesn't ring a bell, it's the giant radio telescope built into a sinkhole in Puerto Rico, the one with the 1,000-foot dish that's been sitting there since 1963. It's in GoldenEye. It's in Contact. It's the thing that beamed the famous Arecibo message out toward a star cluster in 1974, on purpose, as a "hey we're here" broadcast to whoever might be listening 25,000 light years away. For almost 60 years it was the largest single-aperture telescope on the planet, until China's FAST dish surpassed it a couple years back.
Here's what happened, and it's a genuinely bad sequence of events. Back in August, an auxiliary cable slipped out of its socket and tore a hole about a hundred feet wide through the reflector dish. Not great, but the kind of thing that gets repaired eventually with enough budget and patience. Then on November 6th, a main cable snapped too, one of the ones actually holding up the 900-ton instrument platform that hangs above the dish. That's a much bigger problem. Engineers went in, ran the numbers, and the conclusion was that the whole structure is now at real risk of collapsing on its own, and that trying to fix it might just make that happen faster with people standing underneath it. Multiple contractors apparently looked at the job and said no thanks, too dangerous. So NSF's call was: don't repair it, take it apart in a controlled way instead.
I want to be clear that I'm not an astronomer and I don't have some deep personal history with this place. I've never even been to Puerto Rico. But I remember being a kid and reading about Arecibo doing planetary radar work, tracking near-Earth asteroids well enough to tell us whether they're actually going to hit us or just pass close by, which is a thing I'd genuinely like someone to keep doing. It was also part of the SETI search for decades. And it's just a strange, humbling kind of infrastructure, a machine built into a literal hole in a mountain, that's been quietly doing science since before my parents were born, longer than the internet has existed by a wide margin.
What bugs me about this, and I'll admit this is the opinionated part, is how predictable it feels. NSF's own budget for Arecibo has been getting squeezed for years, there were proposals floated back in 2017 to hand it off or shut it down entirely because the agency didn't want to keep footing the maintenance bill, and now here we are with a facility that's falling apart because a cable nobody had the money to inspect and replace in time finally gave out. I'm not saying anyone could have predicted the exact cable failure. But "we stopped adequately funding upkeep on aging critical infrastructure and then it broke" is not exactly a plot twist. It's the most boring, most American kind of disaster there is.
Anyway. The plan now, as I understand it from Thursday's announcement, is a controlled dismantling rather than letting it fail on its own terms, which at least sounds like the responsible move given what the engineers are saying about the risk. I don't know what happens to the site after that or whether some smaller successor instrument ever gets built there. I hope something does. In the meantime my Twitter timeline is full of PS5 restock bots and M1 chip benchmarks, and somewhere in Puerto Rico there's a telescope that spent six decades listening to the universe that's about to get quietly taken apart, and almost nobody's talking about it.
