So everyone's phone lit up yesterday with the same image: a fuzzy orange donut that's apparently a black hole. By now you've seen it forty times, probably from forty different outlets running the exact same press photo with slightly different headlines. I'm not going to do the "here's what a black hole is" post, because if you've made it to this blog you already know, and also every science site on the internet already did that post better than I could.
What I keep thinking about instead is the part almost nobody's headline mentioned: they didn't email the data.
The Event Horizon Telescope project is eight radio telescopes scattered across the planet, from Hawaii to the South Pole to Spain, all pointed at the same target (the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy, 55 million light years away) at the same time, for years. That's already a wild coordination problem. But the actual data those telescopes collected added up to something like five petabytes, and instead of trying to push that over any kind of network, they shipped it. Physically. Half a ton of hard drives, flown on planes, driven to a processing center in Massachusetts and another in Germany, because in 2019 it's still faster to put storage in a cargo hold than to push it through a fiber line. There's something almost funny about that to me. We build these telescopes that can supposedly image something 55 million light years away with enough precision to see a shadow against superheated gas, and the bottleneck is still "how do we get this onto a plane without it breaking."
(One telescope, the one at the South Pole, couldn't even ship its drives out until the Antarctic summer opened up flights again. So part of this "first image of a black hole" was sitting in Antarctica for months waiting on the weather. I love that. Nobody puts that detail in the headline.)
And can we talk about the word "photo" for a second, because it's bugging me. What got released isn't a photograph in any sense my brain wants to use that word for. Nobody pointed a camera at a black hole and clicked a shutter. What actually happened is that a piece of software (built substantially on work from a computer scientist named Katie Bouman, whose algorithm stitched together the radio signal data from all eight sites into something coherent) reconstructed an image from a huge, messy, incomplete dataset, the same rough principle behind how a single telescope the size of Earth would work if you could build one, except you can't, so you fake it with math and a lot of very precisely synchronized atomic clocks. Calling it a photo isn't wrong exactly, it's just doing a lot of work to make something genuinely strange sound familiar. I get why every outlet wrote "first photo of a black hole" instead of "first horizon-scale radio interferometric reconstruction of a black hole shadow," because nobody's clicking on the second one. But it's worth knowing what you're actually looking at isn't a picture so much as an answer, computed from data that took two years to even move to one location.
I'll admit I've got a small personal thing going on here too: I've spent way too much of my adult life dealing with backup drives and RAID arrays for my own dumb reasons (podcast archives, mostly, nothing as cool as a black hole), and there's something satisfying about a story where the hero move isn't a clever algorithm or a bigger telescope, it's just somebody going "yeah okay, we're going to FedEx the hard drives." Every time I've had to explain to someone why I still keep physical backups instead of trusting everything to the cloud, I feel a little validated by a team of astrophysicists doing the exact same thing at planetary scale.
The image itself is genuinely a big deal, don't get me wrong. A black hole's event horizon was theoretical math for over a century and now there's a picture-shaped thing of one hanging on people's desktops. That part deserves the moment. I just think the logistics story underneath it is more interesting than the orange donut, and almost nobody's telling it. Somewhere in Antarctica right now there might still be a hard drive waiting on a flight.
