Something weird happened to my building over the last couple weeks. Every night around 8:58, things just quiet down. The guy two doors over used to have his TV blasting reruns till midnight, and now it cuts off dead around nine. I know exactly why, because I do the same thing now: sit on the couch, phone in hand, waiting for the little "GET READY!!" push notification from HQ Trivia.
If you haven't gotten sucked in yet, here's the pitch. It's a free app, live video trivia, hosted by a guy named Scott Rogowsky who the internet has already nicknamed the "Quiz Daddy," and it plays out like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire except everybody in the country is playing the same twelve questions at the same second and there's no phone-a-friend. Multiple choice, ten seconds a question. Miss one and you're out, you just get to sit there and watch the game keep happening to other people, which is its own specific kind of misery. Survive all twelve and you split whatever the prize is with everyone else still standing. Usually that works out to something like a dollar fifty each, so nobody's really playing for the money. They added a second game on weekdays a while back too, 3pm, presumably for people whose jobs don't notice four minutes of them staring at a phone.
I lost last night on question nine. The question was which country's flag isn't a rectangle, and I panicked and picked Switzerland because it felt like a weird enough answer to be right. It's Nepal, by the way. I will know that fact forever now, uselessly. That's the part of this app that actually gets me, not the money and honestly not even the trivia itself, but the specific shared misery of a few hundred thousand strangers all blowing the same question at the same instant. You can feel the whole comment feed groan as it scrolls up the side of the screen. It's a genuinely dumb use of live video technology. I mean that as a compliment. I love it.
One real complaint though: the thing crashes constantly. Right around question seven or eight, when the pool's thinned out and everyone left is basically yelling at their phone for Rogowsky to hurry up, the app will just freeze. Spinner, nothing, nothing, then it dumps you onto a "reconnecting" screen, and by the time it catches back up you've missed the next question by default, which counts as an elimination. Happened to me twice this week. For something pulling in this many people every single night, I'd have expected the server side to be a little more figured out by now, but I guess nobody plans for a thing to get this big this fast.
Funny timing too, with the Olympics eating everybody's evening TV already. I never expected to care about curling in my life and somehow mixed doubles had me genuinely invested last week. And yet HQ still carves out its nine o'clock slot every night regardless, and people apparently just toggle between the two. I don't think it's an accident that a full game runs about the length of a commercial break, twelve questions, three or four minutes if nothing lags out, and then you're back to whatever else you were doing.
Somebody's going to figure out how to stretch this format into something bigger than an app that runs twice a day for four minutes at a time. Might be HQ itself, might be some clone that shows up in a few months once the novelty wears thin, the way clones always do once anything gets popular. For right now it's still got that live-event feeling where the entire point is that everyone's doing it at the exact same moment, no replay, no catching up an hour later. Miss it and it's just gone, over, on to tomorrow. Tonight's question was which ocean the Titanic went down in, and I got that one right, so we're calling it a win.
