I set an alarm for 6:45 this morning specifically to watch a spacecraft die, and I regret nothing.

Cassini plunged into Saturn's atmosphere this morning and that was it — mission over, twenty years of it, gone in about a minute as the probe burned up like a shooting star nobody on Earth could actually see. NASA's Deep Space Network station in Canberra lost the signal a little before 8am Eastern, and that was the whole thing. No dramatic explosion footage, no debris field, just silence where a data stream used to be. The control room at JPL applauded anyway, because that's apparently what you do when a machine you've spent two decades of your career on finally stops talking to you.

I've been half-obsessed with this mission since I was a teenager reading about the Huygens probe landing on Titan back in 2005, and I mostly kept quiet about it today because everyone I know wants to talk about the iPhone X instead. Which, fine, the notch is objectively funny looking and Face ID raises real questions I have opinions about. But Apple's event was Tuesday and preorders for the 8 open today too, and it's eaten every scrap of tech-news oxygen this week. A spacecraft that mapped hydrocarbon lakes on a moon and found geysers erupting out of an ice shell on another one gets a five-minute segment wedged between iPhone camera comparisons. That's a genuinely bad trade and I'll die on this hill.

Some numbers, because I like numbers: Cassini launched in October 1997, took seven years to reach Saturn, and then spent thirteen more years out there, way past its planned four-year mission. The whole thing (Cassini plus the Huygens lander, built by the Europeans) ran somewhere around $3.9 billion across NASA, ESA and the Italian space agency. For that money you got the sharpest pictures anyone's ever taken of Saturn's rings, the discovery that Enceladus has a subsurface ocean spraying itself into space through cracks at its south pole, and a hexagonal storm at Saturn's north pole that's been sitting there for decades looking like something out of a screensaver.

The reason they crashed it into the planet on purpose is the part that gets me, honestly. Cassini was almost out of fuel, and once you can't control a spacecraft's trajectory anymore you can't guarantee it won't eventually drift into Enceladus or Titan, both of which are actual candidates for hosting some kind of life. So instead of risking contaminating a moon that might matter to that question in fifty years, they flew it straight into Saturn and let it burn up as a meteor. Deliberately ending something that worked, to protect something that might not even matter yet. There's a version of that decision that applies to more than spacecraft, but I'll leave it there before I get precious about it.

I watched the NASA TV feed from JPL mission control, which mostly consisted of engineers in matching purple polos staring at screens and occasionally hugging each other. Earl Maize, the program manager, choked up a little reading off the final telemetry, and honestly so did I, alone in my kitchen at 7am with bad coffee, which is a strange thing to admit on a blog that's usually about laptops and RSS readers. I've had a picture of Saturn's rings as my desktop background off and on since 2008 and it feels weird that the thing that took it is just gone now.

Nothing replaces it immediately. There's talk of a Europa mission down the line, and some early concept work on a drone-like probe for Titan that sounds like science fiction, but those are years off at best. For now Saturn just goes back to being a thing we look at through telescopes from 800 million miles away, the way it was before 2004.
