So this Tuesday the Nobel committee gave out the Physics prize to three guys, Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura, for inventing a blue LED that actually works well enough to use. Eight million kronor split three ways, which works out to something like $370,000 each after the exchange rate, for a light bulb color. I know that sounds small when you say it like that, but stick with me, because it's actually a pretty great story and it made me feel a little guilty about how I use my computer at night.
Red and green LEDs have been around since the 60s. Cheap, easy, been in every calculator and VCR clock since before I was born. Blue was the hard one. Researchers were stuck on it for decades because you need a totally different semiconductor material (gallium nitride, if you care) and nobody could grow a clean enough crystal of the stuff. Akasaki and Amano cracked it in Japan in the late 80s and early 90s, Nakamura figured out how to make it bright enough to actually be useful shortly after while working at a small chemical company that, from what I've read, wasn't thrilled about him spending years on a side project that wasn't paying off yet. Then it did.
Here's the part people skip over: once you have a good blue LED, you basically get white LED lighting for free. Coat a blue LED with the right phosphor and it converts some of that blue into a broader spectrum, and now you've got a white light bulb that sips power instead of guzzling it. Every LED bulb in your house, every laptop backlight, your phone screen, all of it traces back to those three guys solving the blue problem. Kind of wild that something that specific and dry sounding is why my desk lamp barely gets warm anymore.
And okay, here's my actual confession. I've been running f.lux on this machine for something like two years now, the little app that shifts your screen color warmer after sunset so you're not staring at a wall of blue light at 11pm wrecking your sleep. I have it set to kick in around 8:30 and I still catch myself flipping it off "just for a second" to check a color on a design mockup, and then forgetting, and then it's midnight and my screen is basically a tanning bed pointed at my face. So there's something a little funny about a week where the world is celebrating the invention of the exact light frequency I spend every evening trying to filter back out. Progress is weird like that. We spent thirty years chasing blue light so hard that three people won the actual Nobel Prize for it, and now half my RSS feed is people writing about how blue light is ruining our sleep and we should all buy amber glasses.
I'll admit I did the Home Depot thing a while back too, swapped out most of the bulbs in the house for LEDs, and I distinctly remember standing in the aisle being annoyed that a single bulb was $9.97 when the old incandescent ones were like two bucks for a four-pack. Felt like a ripoff at the time. They've come down a lot since, and mine are still going strong three-plus years later without a single burnout, so fine, I was wrong to grumble, the math works out eventually. Just took me a while to stop doing mental math in the checkout line about how many incandescents I could've bought instead.
Anyway. Not really sure there's a bigger point here other than it's a nice reminder that the boring, unglamorous stuff — a specific wavelength of light, a stubborn material science problem nobody wanted to touch — is sometimes the thing that actually changes how millions of people live day to day, way more than whatever's getting announced on a stage next week with a big screen behind it. Nobody puts "invented a better semiconductor crystal growth process" on a keynote slide, but here we are, typing on screens lit by exactly that.
Going to go turn my screen warmer now. Feels appropriate.
