The $500k Apology Money Finally Showed Up

Tech News gaming gta online rockstar games server-issues

I want to start with a confession: I hadn't logged into GTA Online since about October 3rd. Not because I didn't want to. I'd been looking forward to it since the story mode credits rolled in September, but because every single attempt ended the same way. Either I'd get bounced back to the character creator with no explanation, or the game would just sit there on "Fetching Cloud Data" for eight or nine minutes before dumping me to the dashboard like nothing happened.

I wasn't imagining it either. My buddy Deacon lost his entire character around October 4th, level 17-ish, a couple of cars he'd actually saved up for, gone. He posted about it in a group chat and I remember three other people just replying with the same screenshot of the spinning cloud icon. Rockstar's own forums were basically wallpapered with that image for the better part of a week.

So when Rockstar put up a post on the 10th saying they'd be crediting every account that existed before October 28th with $500,000 in GTA$, split into two payments across October and November, I read it and did the thing you do when a company says "we hear you" — I nodded, shrugged, and figured I'd believe it when I saw it. Apology money from a publisher usually means a coupon code that expires before you remember it exists.

Except this time it actually showed up. Mine landed sometime Wednesday night, the 16th, sitting in my in-game bank account with zero fanfare. No popup, no little "sorry about the mess" note, nothing. I only clocked it because I went to price out a garage on Portola Drive and the number in the corner was way higher than what I remembered having.

Half a million dollars in a game where a decent car runs you $9,000 to $20,000 and a starter apartment is somewhere around $80,000 is, frankly, a lot. I bought a Bravado Buffalo, a garage to put it in, and still had enough left over to not think twice about respawning with better guns every time I died in a job. It's a strange feeling to have a game's economy just stop mattering to you a week and a half after launch.

None of this fixes the actual problem, which is that the servers are still rough. I got kicked out of a heist setup mission twice on Thursday for no reason anyone could explain, and there's a lag when you first spawn into a session where cars and pedestrians pop in about a second after you'd expect them to, which is not great when you're doing 90 down the highway. The money is a nice gesture. It is not the same as the thing working.

On a completely unrelated note, my cable modem decided to die on the same day all this was happening, which meant I spent Wednesday afternoon on hold with my ISP instead of playing anything at all, so I got to experience the "your data has been lost, here's some money" feeling twice in one week, just from two totally different companies with two totally different senses of customer service. Comcast did not give me $500,000. Comcast gave me a $15 credit and a technician appointment eight days out. I'm not saying Rockstar handled the whole online launch well, because they clearly didn't, but at least when they screwed up they threw actual weight behind the apology instead of a form letter.

Anyway. If you played GTA Online before the 28th and you haven't checked your in-game balance lately, go look. It might already be sitting there. And if your character got wiped entirely back in the first week like Deacon's did, from what I've read the second payment in November is meant to help cover some of that too, though I'll believe the exact number when it actually posts, same as I did this time.

Los Santos is still a mess most nights. It's just a mess with a much nicer garage now.
