Voyager 1 Just Left the Solar System

So this happened yesterday and I'm still kind of chewing on it: NASA confirmed that Voyager 1 has left the solar system. Not "is about to leave," not "might be near the edge." It's out. Interstellar space. A machine built in the mid-1970s, with less onboard memory than a single email attachment, is now farther from the sun than anything humans have ever sent, floating in the space between stars.

The confirmation came out of a paper in the journal Science, and the detail that got me wasn't the announcement itself, it was how they figured it out. Voyager 1 doesn't have a working instrument that can directly measure the boundary it crossed anymore, the plasma sensor that would've done that job died back in 1980. So the scientists had to wait for a solar eruption, a coronal mass ejection, to travel all the way out there and rattle the plasma around the spacecraft, then read the vibrations to figure out how dense the particles are. Dense plasma means interstellar space. Thin plasma means still inside the solar wind's bubble. They'd been waiting since April for a big enough eruption to reach it. That's the whole method: wait for the sun to burp, eleven billion miles away, and listen.

Eleven point seven billion miles, roughly, is where it is right now. A radio signal from Voyager 1 takes about seventeen hours to get here. Seventeen hours. I get irritated when a page takes three seconds to load on my phone at a coffee shop with bad wifi, and this spacecraft is talking to us on a lag longer than a transatlantic flight, using a transmitter with less output than a refrigerator light bulb.

Launched September 5, 1977. There's a golden record bolted to the side of it with whale songs and Bach on it, in case anyone ever finds it. It runs on the heat from decaying plutonium, on 68 kilobytes of computer memory (kilobytes, not megabytes), and its handlers back on Earth are people who, in a lot of cases, are older than the mission itself and had to relearn the programming conventions from decades-old documentation just to keep talking to it.

I bring this up partly because I think it's one of the best stories of the year and partly because it's a nice bit of perspective against the phone stuff that's eaten the whole tech internet this week. Everyone's still arguing about whether the new fingerprint sensor is going to get cracked within a week of launch (it will, somebody's already got a bounty going for it) and whether the plastic model is a downgrade or just a different colored downgrade, and meanwhile there's a forty-year-old space probe out past the edge of the sun's influence, returning actual new information about the universe on a power budget that wouldn't run your microwave. I like phones fine. I've got one of the loudest opinions in my group chat about camera sensors, ask anyone in it. This just isn't the same weight class, is all.

The part that gets me is how undramatic it apparently was in real time. There's no crossing-the-line moment, no klaxon going off on some console in Pasadena. It happened back on August 25, 2012, more than a year before anyone was in a position to say for sure it had happened, because the confirming data had to physically travel out and then physically travel back, and then get argued over by a team of people who wanted to be very sure before they'd say it out loud. That is such a different pace of certainty than most of what I write about on here, where a rumor becomes a headline becomes a follow-up post inside of about six hours, corrections and all.

Voyager 2 is still out there too, a bit behind and headed off in a different direction, and it's still got a working plasma instrument. So at some point it'll cross its own boundary and we'll get to do this whole thing again, except properly, in real time, instead of piecing it together after the fact from a year-old solar burp. I'm oddly looking forward to that in a way I don't look forward to most tech news these days, mine included.
